Nootropic Peptides: Research Applications
A category overview of CNS-active peptides studied in preclinical cognitive, anxiolytic, and neuroprotective research, including Selank and Semax.

Origins in Russian Peptide Neuroscience
Selank and Semax share a research lineage: both were developed by Russian research institutions (building on work at the Institute of Molecular Genetics, Russian Academy of Sciences) as synthetic analogs of endogenous peptide fragments — tuftsin for Selank, and ACTH(4-10) for Semax. Both compounds were engineered with a Pro-Gly-Pro C-terminal extension, a modification studied for its effect on proteolytic stability in central nervous system research contexts.
Distinct Research Focuses
Selank research has concentrated on anxiolytic-like effects in rodent behavioral models, alongside investigation of its immunomodulatory properties inherited from its tuftsin-derived structure. Mechanistic studies have examined its relationship to GABAergic signaling and BDNF expression.
Semax research has focused more heavily on neuroprotective and cognitive endpoints — BDNF/TrkB pathway activity, monoamine neurotransmitter turnover, and neuronal survival in models of induced cerebral ischemia.
Common Research Methodologies
Nootropic peptide research in this category commonly employs:
- Rodent behavioral paradigms (elevated plus maze, conditioned fear response, Morris water maze) to assess anxiolytic-like behavior and spatial memory
- Quantitative gene-expression assays (qPCR, ELISA) for neurotrophic factors such as BDNF
- In vivo ischemia/reperfusion models to study neuroprotective endpoints
A Note on Scope
Both peptides in this category are studied in the context of central nervous system research pathways. Neither is approved for human clinical use, and no dosing, administration, or self-experimentation guidance is provided by Peptide Factory or appropriate outside a controlled research setting.
